Wireless & Computer Speaker Reviews

Whether they're computer or portable, wireless or AirPlay, or desktop speakers, we review them all. From the latest in aptX Bluetooth to wifi enabled, lifestyle and compact speakers can offer BIG sound. Our reviews will help you determine what's worth your hard earned cash and what products should be skipped all together.
Wireless Speakers Bring Premium Sound To Roku TVs
Roku’s new wireless speakers represent the company’s response to the ever-growing demand for affordable sound-bars. But these speakers, which will sell for $200 when they arrive in November, are sold as a pair, allowing them to produce a real stereo soundstage that small sound-bars can’t match. The downside? They will only work with Roku capable TVs.
EMP VT-40.2 Tube Amplifier & 41-SE/B Speaker System Review
The EMP VT-40.2 hybrid tube amplifier and 41-SE/B Beryllium cone speaker system was truly a delight to review. Its ability to transform your PC desktop into a high end audiophile rig on a shoestring budget is without peer. The 41-SE/B speakers alone are worth the full price of admission of this system. The EMP sound continually seduces me to work longer at my desktop PC which is good for Audioholics but not so good when I am late to dinner. With my love of food equaling that of audio, that speaks volumes for just how good this system is. Considering their very liberal return policy, FREE 30 day home trial program and FREE shipping I can’t say anything else other than “hearty appetite” as this is the meal your PC has been waiting for you to feed it. Once you dine on this system, you won’t settle for fast food or crappy mediocre sound again.
McIntosh MXA60 Integrated Audio System First Look
McIntosh has the answer. The MXA60 Integrated Audio System is a standalone tabletop system complete with a CD/SACD/MP3 player, 75-watts per channel amplifier, and speakers. This system is for the true connoisseur of high end audio. The preamplifier is tube powered (yeah!) and the speakers are two-way bass reflex.
JVC XS-SR iPod Speaker System First Look
The JVC XS-SR isn't your normal iPod/iPhone dock. Not only does it sport Dolby Virtual Surround but it can also hold your iPod/iPhone horizontally for widescreen viewing of video content. For just south of $150, it may be the perfect accessory for last year's stocking stuffer for your favorite college student. Plus, it gets you out of having to buy them a TV. Everyone (well you so that's all that's important) wins.
Audioengine A2 Desktop Speaker Review
Small dimensions, a pretty finish, power to spare, and two accommodating inputs, you can be sure Audioengine’s Desktop A2 speaker system will augment your CD player, DVD player, computer, game console, portable music player, or any other product with a mini-jack or RCA output. The A2 is a two-way system with a 2.75” woofer that simply amazes you with the amount of bass it can produce. I am happy with the quality of this product especially when used with my Playstation 2. The 3-year warranty is automatic, and transferable, which means there is no need to register. Recommended!
B&W MM-1 Multimedia Speakers Review
B&W sells speakers. And I don't mean for that to sound trite. I mean, they sell speakers. Lots of them. They are known for both high-end studio monitors as well as audiophile home audio. What more and more people are also finding out, however, is that B&W can make a mean small speaker as well. "Small" as in a multimedia, PC speaker. Last year we reviewed the B&W Zeppelin and found out that big things can come in small packages. Well when we cracked open the MM-1 speakers we were less skeptical. That's good for us, but for B&W it just meant that they needed to maintain their rapidly-rising reputation among our staff of listeners.
Audyssey Audio Dock South of Market Edition Preview
A decent quality Lifestyle iPod/iPhone dock isn't exactly new, but one that includes tons of mainstream technologies typically found in AV receivers and home theater in-a-box (HTiB) systems is. Designed to fit into your connected lifestyle, the Audio Dock: South of Market Edition from Audyssey perfectly complements your iPhone or iPod Touch. Its innovative design fits anywhere, sounds great, and streams music and calls wirelessly. This dock is full of technology from Audyssey and it’s coming to stores this November.
iHome iP3BZC Studio Series Audio System for iPhone/iPod
Based on the popular and aesthetically-appealing iP1, iHome's new iP3 Speaker System for iPod/iPhone is the newest addition to its acclaimed Studio Series collection. The iP3 utilizes many of the same features that made the iP1 a standout, including Bongiovi Acoustics' Digital Power Station (DPS) technology, a clean minimalist design, and component video output for playback of iPhone/iPod videos on TV.
Aperion Audio Intimus 4T Summit Wireless System First Look
The Aperion Audio Intimus 4T Summit Wireless System is the ultimate lifestyle system that looks great, sounds great, and is easy to setup. I look forward to reviewing this system and recommending it to those like my parents whom are fed up with complex bulky A/V gear. The beauty of this system is it eliminates the need for an A/V receiver. The Home Theater One wireless hub does all of your surround sound decoding of HD formats such as TrueHD, DTS HD, etc. Each speaker is bi-amped (center is tri-amped) with active crossovers to eliminate losses associated with passive components for the best possible sound. It's nice to know there is an intelligent alternative that doesn't compromise fidelity for convenience.
Zikmu Parrot by Philippe Starck Wireless Speakers Preview
Sometimes I like chocolate in my peanut butter. Combining advanced applications of wireless technology coupled with artistic, sophisticated design is about the equivalent, and the Zikmu Parrot Speakers by Philippe Starke certainly combines aesthetics, technology and lifestyle. Designed to blend elegant minimalism with the latest technology, Parrot’s next generation Zikmu wireless speakers by Phillipe Starck certainly make an impression.
Onkyo CS-V645 DVD/CD Mini System First Look
Consisting of a combination of iPod dock, DVD player, and 40 watt per channel receiver, the Onkyo CS-V645 looks to be a standalone solution for space and budget challenged customers. What we like best about the CS-V645 is the price. It will be available in early December with a suggested retail price of $399 just in time for the holiday season. This looks to be very nice starter system for students or people with little space. We could never get behind a system (two channel or no) without a subwoofer output especially one that was designed with video in mind. At less that $400, the CS-V645 has everything you need for a relatively compact system that can later be integrated into a more serious home theater. With 1080p upscaling, iPod integration, and ability to access USB content, the Onkyo CS-V645 should be everything your youngster needs to access their music and video.

Bowers Wilkins (B&W) Zeppelin Air iPod Speaker Preview
Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Air is aiming to be the ultimate AirPlay wireless audio system with completely updated drive units and advanced Digital Signal Processing plus fully integrated AirPlay technology so users can easily stream music wirelessly from iTunes, iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. Three years ago the original multi-award winning Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin redefined what could be expected from an iPod speaker system. Now Zeppelin Air provides another seismic shift in audio performance, design and functionality with completely updated drive units, up-rated amplification and the latest in Digital Signal Processing to deliver improved sound quality. And while Zeppelin's iconic shape has been retained, subtly updated styling help modernize this design classic.
Speakal Sports Line iPod Speakers Preview
Speakal is a company that seems to be driven by its passion for intelligent technology and innovative designs. This week they expanded their lineup of advanced docking solutions to include lifelike replicas for the Football, Basketball, and Soccer enthusiast. Each of these powerful 2.1 companions for your iDevice boasts 360 degree sound distribution, a 15W subwoofer, and volume touch controls. Speakal Dr Who and Top Gear iPod Speakers Preview
Speakal is a company that seems to be driven by its passion for intelligent technology and innovative designs. Each of these powerful 2.1 companions for your iDevice boasts 360 degree sound distribution, a 15W subwoofer, and volume touch controls. Antec Soundscience Rockus 3D 2.1 Speaker System First Look
The Antec soundscience rockus 3D 2.1 speaker system’s satellites are made entirely from anodized aluminum which reduces distortion caused by enclosure vibration and rattling that plagues traditional PC speakers. Additionally, its subwoofer utilizes passive radiator technology to deliver, according to Antec, an expansive range of bass comparable to larger footprint subwoofers. So do we think you'll agree with all of Antec's adjectives about how the soundscience rockus 3D 2.1 speakers sound? No (especially not the 10Hz spec). But for the under $250 price we see it as a very attractive solution for your kid's computer/TV.
Corsair SP2500 PC 2.1 Speakers Review
I'm always on the lookout for good PC speakers. The challenge, of course, is that most manufacturers are looking to squeak out decent performance from plastic and paper, without a terrible amount of engineering and certainly without the benefit of much power or attention to the things that define good quality speakers. Corsair has bucked the trend in a number of ways with the SP2500 PC 2.1 Speakers. First of all, they have a subwoofer the size of a small refrigerator. Secondly, they put out a couple of Class-D powered 2-way speakers. Compare this to most anemic plastic sub enclosures and "full-range" speakers. The other thing they add is a wired remote control with an LCD-screen and discrete control over subwoofer and satellite speaker volume.
Logitech Speaker System Z906 First Look
Is the Logitech Speaker System Z906 for everyone? Of course not. But if you are on a serious budget and are looking for a $400 5.1 system with a basic receiver, we're betting you could do a lot worse. The speakers are all wall mountable, the "sub" promises 165 watts of "pure" bass, and the remote is wireless. With up to six inputs on the control unit/receiver, you'll be hard pressed to use them all. We wish we had more information on the frequency response and drivers (not to mention construction) but, honestly, it doesn't matter. It has 500 watts. And that's, like, 70 cents a watt. You can't beat that right?
Audio-Technica ATH-ANC23 QuietPoint Active Noise-Cancelling In-Ear Headphones First Look
If you are a frequent traveler, surely you've looked at a pair of noise-canceling headphones. With memory foam tips which should allow for long listening sessions without discomfort and an included airline adapter, the Audio-Technica ATH-ANC23s look to be a very attractive solution. Usable in active (with up to 90% of outside noise eliminated) or passive mode, these headphones should have everything you need for those long overseas trips. At under $100 MSRP with a street price of $20 less than that, they are practically an impulse buy compared to some of the over-hyped competition.
Speakal iExecutive Audio System Review
From the people that brought you iPig, iPanda, and miSoccer, introducing iExecutive - an iDevice dock that is, thankfully, not shaped like an executive. We, probably like you, have a hard time taking a company that put out an iPod dock in the shape of a pig seriously, but the iExecutive looks like a pretty solid offering. The "subwoofer" is down-firing and ported and the iExecutive is compatible with all iPhones and iPods with dock connectors. For other media players, there is a 3.5mm connector as well as a MMC and SD memory card slot and an USB port. Add to that the FM receiver and composite video output, and you've got a pretty intriguing product for around $230.
Atlantic Technology H-PAS PowerBar 235 SoundBar Preview
Atlantic Technology revealed their new H-PAS PowerBar 235 which, like their H-PAS tower speakers debuted at last year's CEDIA Expo, is said to defy the laws of physics producing deep rich bass beyond conventional speakers in its size class. Using the company's patented H-PAS™ bass technology, Atlantic Technology is so confident in this product that they are marketing it as the world's first Soundbar that doesn't need an external powered subwoofer to provide satisfying bass output. The H-PAS PowerBar 235 is a two-channel powered sound bar with digital surround processing for 3 & 5 channel simulated output, all contained in a single 42- x 5¼- x 5¾-inch cabinet with stated frequency response down to 47 Hz at -3dB. The demo was most impressive and we are eager to conduct a full review.
Klipsch Gallery G-17 Air AirPlay Speaker System Preview
Housed in a sleek, black case, the Apple AirPlay equipped G-17 Air sports two .75" (1.9 cm) aluminum diaphragm compression drivers mated to dual 90° x 90° square Tractrix Horn-loaded tweeters. This allows you to stream content from your iDevice (anything running iOS 4.2 or higher) or your iTunes from your computer (PC or Mac) over your home network. Not to leave out the other phones, any Android-base phone with the music player app can stream to the G-17 Air as well. Since even the most tech-unsavvy person has been able to figure out their iPhone, pressing a button to send it to the G-17 Air shouldn't present much of a problem. Add to that the portability of the system, and you have a whole-home system that you can take from room to room (or change locations for different events).
Audioengine 5+ Powered Speakers Preview
There is no doubt that the Audioengine A5+ speakers are going to be a hit. At $400, you are getting a lot of speaker for not a lot of money. With other speakers available offering a fraction of the performance and convenience for near the same amount of money, we can't see why you wouldn't put these on your short list. Multiple connections, the ability to charge your USB powered devices, and a front mounted volume control makes the A5+ very attractive. Add to that 1" MDF construction, a 22mm soft-dome tweeter paired with a 5" Kevlar woofer, and a response down to 50Hz and the A5+ hits all the right notes. Including a threaded insert to connect them directly to stands for safety means desk space isn't even a concern any longer.
Energy Power EM-2.1 Multimedia Speaker System Preview
The Energy Power EM-2.1 Multimedia Speaker System is going to sell on two features - the name and the price. At $99.99, the name of Energy behind the Power EM-2.1 is going to push this speaker system into the black. Simply because they are priced low enough that most of the rest of the competition is some no-name brand. Honestly, if we only had a C-note to spend, we'd take a hard look at these as well. At least we think they will listen to them before shipping while those no-name brands most likely just have the cheapest drivers shoved inside the cheapest enclosure with no thought at all to sound quality.
Libratone Live and Lounge AirPlay Speaker Preview
Libratone markets their new Live and Lounge AirPlay speakers as "Scandinavia in your living room." Well, apparently this isn't the Ikea Scandinavia but the more expensive, cashmere-wrapped Scandinavia. The speakers do boast not only the ability to stream from iDevices via Apple's AirPlay, but also tailor that sound via Libratone's dedicated app. Will it sound $700 worth of good for the portable Live speaker or $1300 worth of good for the larger, Lounge? We don't know. The real question in our minds is how much better will the $100 cashmere wrap make the speakers sound?
XtremeMac Tango Bar USB Powered Speaker Preview
While marketed for Apple products, the XtremeMac Tango Bar will work just fine with your PC. Powered and fed by USB, the sound bar features stereo channels and dual passive radiators. The key here, of course, is price. For a buck less than a C-note, the XtremeMac Tango Bar is pretty much an impulse buy for those purchasing a new computer from the Apple Store. While they haven't published any sort of performance data, the passive radiators alone guarantee that consumers are going to be impressed with the sound. With an additional input for your non-iDevice MP3 player, and headphone and subwoofer outputs, the XtremeMac Tango Bar, at the very least, is giving users options.
Onkyo CS-345 CD Mini System Preview
At $300, the Onkyo CS-345 looks to be well priced and featured for the market. The integrated iPod/iPhone dock will appeal to many and the stereo input will appease the rest. Video output from your docked iDevice is a nice feature for students looking for an easy way to get new content in their dorms. The subwoofer output shows how Onkyo understands that this type of customer is likely to be looking for additional bass before they need additional inputs. The CS-345 may be limited, but it has just about everything a college dorm, bedroom, or office needs.
Velodyne vPulse In-Ear Headphones Preview
The Velodyne vPulse In-Ear Headphones look to be a pretty interesting offering from the, traditionally, subwoofer company. With built-in iDevice and Android functionality, you won't have to remove them to answer your calls. Since they are so new, you can only pre-order them from the Velodyne website. But you will save $10 over the $89 asking price. Frankly, for less than $90, many headphone aficionados would consider these an impulse buy. We're going to have to reserve our final judgement until we can get a pair in our hands... or ears, rather.
AudioEngine A5+ Speakers Review
The last time we touched an AudioEngine A5 speaker (this one is the A5+) was back in 2006. Now 5-1/2 years ago we felt that the A5's had, and I quote "superb build quality, finish, and high-end sound quality". Well, a couple things are different - but mostly not much has changed. First of all, if you loved the AudioEngine A5 speakers, you can still get them - in fact, they're $50 less then they were when we reviewed them. The A5+ speakers, however are more or less a model that is designed for multimedia or active monitor use. They lack the odd top USB charger of the A5, instead moving it to the back. They also dropped the auxiliary power outlet, which was perfect for the popular Apple Airport adapter. What they added was a pair of RCA inputs - and they made the RCA outputs variable - so you can connect them up to a subwoofer and get extension well below 50Hz, which is about what you can expect from the A5+ speakers on their own. For multimedia speakers, the extension of the AudioEngine A5+'s is going to give you some excellent real-world low end not found on most other 2.0 systems. But like we said - add their S8 sub or a similar model and it gets even better.
Paradigm SHIFT Earbud Headphones Preview
Given the wide variety of offerings on the market, we might have expected Paradigm to lean on their name and fans to sell much higher priced offerings. Even at double the price, we could see the Paradigm SHIFT earbuds selling. At these price points, and with this level of performance, the Paradigm SHIFT earbuds are sure to be a hit. If you are looking for a pair of earbuds, you'd be crazy not to put these on your short list.
iLuv MobiDock for Kindle Fire and MobiAir for Smartphones Preview
iLuv is certainly going to sell a few of these docks. The Kindle name alone should be enough to steer a lot of traffic toward their MobiDock. The wireless connection of the MobiAir should interest the more technophile crowd. Currently, it seems like the devices are designed to work with one source at a time - a limitation that makes their price seem a bit high considering many homes have multiple smartphones, tablets, and iDevices. The iLuv myBot OmniFit docking system, on the other hand, means you don't have to worry about the size of your device not working with either of the docks, a feature sure to lure many consumers. We'll definitely be on the lookout for these when they are released in May.
Pioneer STEEZ Dancing BoomBox Preview
Pioneer is betting that "serious" dancers won't be able to live without one of their new STEEZ portable music players. Equipped with dance-specific features like tempo control, 8-Beat skip control, manual cue setting, and an auto Dance Battle mode, what "serious" dancer could live without a STEEZ? Powered by either the mains or batteries, you can Bring It wherever you want, even to Beat Street. Now, you don't have to set a time and date for a dance-off; with STEEZ, you can get your groove on wherever you want. We just want you do to it a little farther from our lawn.
iLuv iSP245 Mo’Beats Speaker Stand Preview
Sure, it is a one trick pony, but the iLuv Mo'Beats has a good trick. A truly wireless speaker (lithium-ion powered) with a wireless (bluetooth) or wired (3.5mm) connection to your device, the Mo'Beats will hold your device while you use it. This is great for students or professionals on the go that don't want to deal with a bunch of wires. It is also great for those that don't have a single spot that they use a dock or have more than one person in a family that wants to use it. At $90, the Mo'Beats isn't cheap but it is an elegant solution to the problem of wires, portability, and hands.
Audyssey Audio Dock Air AirPlay Speaker Preview
The question is how much are you willing to pay for AirPlay? Audyssey is betting that the sound quality of their Audio Dock Air and the convenience of Apple's AirPlay is worth $400 (that's the MSRP on the site, we've never seen a retail price higher than $350). Audyssey seems to be putting all of it's eggs in the AirPlay basket. They certainly aren't trying to woo you with looks. The Audio Dock Air looks like one of the bass modules that come with computer speakers though we doubt it sounds like that. Knowing their lineage, we fully expect Audyssey to put out a product that sounds good. The question is if the rest of the world, those less familiar with Audyssey, has the same expectations.
Definitive Technology Incline Desktop Speakers Review
Your computer or monitor’s speakers leave a lot to be desired when it comes to audio quality. OK, let’s just say it: they stink. Why should you settle for inferior sound at your desk? You shouldn’t. And Definitive Technology looks to give your desktop setup a major upgrade with their new Incline bipolar desktop speakers. Does Definitive Technology deliver an audiophile-quality desktop system? Read our full review to find out.
Gear4 AirZone Series 1 AirPlay Speaker Review
So this is Gear4's new AirZone Series 1. It's a stereo speaker that can dock your iOS device, stream music from AirPlay, take audio from an auxiliary source, play FM radio and it smells like bacon. It doesn't really smell like bacon, but if it did I would totally buy it. I would. Somebody needs to put AirPlay into a car audio system. Cause that's about the only place we haven't seen it yet. In fact, Apple's wireless technology seems to be steadily infiltrating the home audio segment. We'd say Gear4 is jumping on the bandwagon, but they're too early to market to slap that on them - they're one of the pioneers.
Aperion ARIS Wireless Speaker for Windows 7&8 Now Shipping!
Aperion Audio, who is known for making loudspeakers and delling them direct-to-consumer, has done something different. It's developed a wireless speaker for Windows. That's right, not for AirPlay, but for Windows devices. We previously reported on how Aperion gave Microsoft employees a sneak preview of this newest wireless speaker; the ARIS. The ARIS lets digital music lovers listen to their tunes from any room in their home. They simply place the speaker where they want it and connect via wireless or Ethernet to their home network using the Windows 7 or 8 operating system. This product is NOW shipping!
Bose Wave Music System III Preview
For almost 19 years, Bose has been successfully marketing their Wave Radio Music System. Over the years, they've added new features such as a CD player, and alarm functionality and even color options. Today when we logged into the Audioholics Facebook page we noticed a post from Bose linking to their "new" Wave Music System III along with the following quote "It’s not a makeover … more like a make better. Bose Wave music system III." We were interested to determine whether or not any audio enhancements have been made to this unit, so we opened up a chat window with a friendly Bose support staff member to get the scoop.
Logitech UE Air Speaker Review
Logitech just released their first AirPlay-enabled speaker, the Logitech UE Air Speaker. AirPlay has been a technology we've been extremely impressed by. If you're in the apple ecosystem it's bound to be a part of your life if you're buying current AV products and love the idea of streaming music wirelessly. The UE is Logitech's abbreviation of a company they purchased back in '08, called Ultimate Ears. The Air Speaker, which looks like the business end of a Hammerhead shark, is pretty cool-looking, with minimal buttons and an integrated iPhone/iPod dock that retracts into the base when not used.
NuForce Cube Mobile Audio Center Preview
You may be wondering why we would be interested in the NuForce Cube Mobile Audio Center when it has so little information about it available. Frankly, anything with such versatility and potential excites us. Even if the speaker isn't great, it is sure to be better than what is in our laptops. A portable speaker is always interesting but adding the headphone amp and USB DAC functionality just takes it to the next level. We have high hopes for the NuForce Cube. At a $119 MSRP, we may have to pick one up just to see what it is all about.
iHome iW2 AirPlay Speaker Review
We've now reviewed three AirPlay speakers. Well, two actually, this is the third - the iHome iW2 AirPlay speaker. It's closer in looks to the Gear4 AirZone speaker, but functionally closer to the Logitech UE Air Speaker. Here's what I mean. The iW2 has a similar appearance to the AirZone, with rounded sides and slightly smaller dimensions. But it lacks a display and uses an App, iHome Connect, to setup the speaker on your network. That means you don't have to fuss with using the top controls to configure your wireless network or password. We like that. We also like the fact that the iW2 works with four different iHome Apps to bring you alarm functions, Internet radio and even custom EQs. If you want.
Denon Cocoon iPod AirPlay Dock Systems Preview
Denon's new Cocoon Home and Cocoon Portable docks can connect directly to your iDevice via their motorized shelves or via Apple's AirPlay. The can be controlled directly, with an included remote, by an iOS or Android app, or web browser. They have Ethernet and integrated WiFi and DNLA certification for local streaming and Internet radio capability. Put it all together and you've got one of the more fully featured AirPlay dock offerings on the market. At $599 for the standalone Cocoon Home or $499 for the Cocoon Portable with its water resistant case and 5 hour battery, Denon has thought long and hard about its consumers.
KEF X300A Digital Hi-Fi Speaker System Preview
A while back, we previewed the KEF LS50 Mini Monitors. At the time, we were excited because we were seeing KEF bring some of their higher-end technology to a product that was much more affordable. At $1500 a pair, the LS50s weren't exactly an impulse buy, but they were within the reach of many enthsiasts. KEF is continuing this tradition with the announcement of their X300A Digital Hi-Fi Speakers for your office. While they don't have all the technology of the LS50s, they are self powered, are fed digitally, and cost only $799.99 a pair.
Palo Alto Cubik Speakers Review
When Palo Alto's Cubik speakers showed up, I had to take a look. As you can see, they have a unique design - the speakers seem to float in the air, positioned in a way that the drivers points up at you - perfect for a desktop placement. They're also angular, but more than that, they are like dice with the clipped edges that makes them seem like they could tumble over at any second. I do a lot of work on the computer. While I'm a reviewer, I also have to do a lot of writing, editing... Facebooking. In any case, I'm always on the lookout for good speakers for my workspace. It's important, to me at least, that I have decent speakers on any computer that's parked on a desk. I'm also a fan of good design.
Behringer iNuke BOOM Junior Preview
The Behringer iNuke BOOM Junior takes everything that was in the original, furniture-sized, iNuke BOOM dock and makes it smaller. Behringer has included dual tweeters, dual midranges, and a woofer to make sure you are still blown away by how loud it is. When the original has 10,000 watts, those interested in the smaller, more affordable version are going to be worried about volume. At $180, the iNuke BOOM Junior has enough features to be competitive though it's volume is obviously the selling point. While we remain skeptical, we're curious about how it actually sounds. Now that it doesn't cost more than our car, we might actually get a chance to find out.
AQ Audio SmartSpeaker Preview
Out of the box, the AQ SmartSpeaker will stream from your iDevice/iTunes via AirPlay or your Windows 7 machine via Play To. With a DLNA certified Android streaming app on the horizon, the AQ SmartSpeaker is the most compatible wireless speaker we've ever seen. For $179 a pop ($349 for two, $675 for four), the AQ SmartSpeaker is an easy way to add a whole home audio system without wires. With each of the speakers able to be set in mono, left, or right modes, you've got a multitude of options. A 3.5mm jack allows you to take the speaker with you. It all sounds great. All we need to know now is how the AQ SmartSpeaker sounds.
NuForce S3-BT CD Quality Bluetooth Speakers Preview
If you absolutely must have wireless speakers, the NuForce S3-BT speaker system features the latest in Bluetooth streaming. With an additional analogue input for use with non-Bluetooth devices, they are pretty flexible. We wish there were some sort of subwoofer output as we doubt they really reach down to 50Hz with any authority. More than anything, we'd like to get our hands on these - literally just to feel them. Speakers wrapped in leatherette? If nothing else, they'll have that going for them. At $299 a pair, they certainly are priced right.
WAE WSM01 Hercules Portable Wireless Speaker Preview
Regardless of your smartphone or tablet preference, WAE (Wireless Audio Experience) has a portable speaker for you. Their first offering, the WSM01, uses a USB dongle to connect to your PC/Mac/Linux computer via 2.4GHz. That's right, Linux. That should tell you something about how universal WAE is trying to be. On the horizon look for Made for iPhone certified and Android compatible modes. Even an offering targeting audiophiles. Whether you are looking for a desktop model or something to take to the beach, WAE is looking to provide want you want.
Unmonday 4.3L AirPlay Speaker Preview
At $700 a pop the Unmonday 4.3L speakers aren't exactly cheap. With a built in wireless router for Apple AirPlay anywhere, amp, 10 hour battery life, and Dolby Surround, you can see where your money went. With a speaker that is only now going into production, it's hard to anticipate how they'll sound. And no matter how cool the control scheme is, or or how portable they are, sound is what is most important in a speaker. We're very interested to see how these are received when they start shipping in 2013.
Edifier e10 Exclaim 2.0 High Performance Desktop Speakers Preview
Are the Edifier e10 Exclaim 2.0 desktop speakers a collection of buzzwords all wrapped in an attractive package? Maybe. But with dual enclosures, each featuring a passive radiator and it's own amp, and a focus on sound quality through DSP and DRC, they are very good buzzwords. While we'll withhold any verdict on sound quality until we actually hear them, the Edifier e10 Exclaim speakers have a unique enough design, and enough of the technology we like to see in a desktop set of speakers, to justify the $99.99 price tag.
Brookstone Big Blue Media Tower Preview
At $400, the Big Blue Media Tower has a lot of features perfect for distributed audio. With two physical inputs plus Bluetooth compatibility, it would be well suited to a living room environment. With the small footprint (eight inches square) and relatively small overall size, even the most fervent objectors to speakers should be pacified. The angled drivers means that sound should be well disbursed and the ported design should provide adequate bass. This could be the perfect gift for those relatives that don't really want speakers but do want a way to listen to their music easily.
Geneva Sound System Model XS Speaker Review
This week we're reviewing the Geneva Sound System Model XS. The Geneva XS bills itself as the "world’s first portable audio system with true Hi-Fi sound." While it sounds pretty good, considering it's a battery-powered system with dual 1" tweeters and a 2" woofer, I'm not sure I'm ready to deliver the "Hi-Fi" moniker to it just yet. In fact, I don't know that anyone's every really thought of a small portable speaker like this as Hi-Fi... maybe that's why Geneva went after the market.
Dirac HD Player App for iPhone Earbuds Review
The question I believe I need to answer is whether purchasing the Dirac HD Player for your stock iPhone earbuds is better than buying a new set of headphones. Well, if you could point me to $2.99 headphones that perform as well as the Dirac HD Player, I'd say no. But you are going to have to spend upwards of $40-$60 to get something that sounds as good as the Dirac HD player. While it can't turn your earbuds into $500 headphones, it can take something that sounds fairly horrible out of the box and make them sound so much better than you won't believe your ears. I know I didn't.
Monster ClarityHD Model One Speakers Review
This week we had just enough time to take a sneak peek at the latest loudspeaker from Monster, the Clarity HD Model One speakers. So in a sense, think of this as an unboxing video... except that it's not... and... well, those videos are kinda like watching someone else open a present. Anyway, we want to tell you more about these speakers and then maybe you can find a place to audition them. The Clarity HD Model Ones by Monster are certainly different - even in their looks. They're bold with color options of Gloss Red, Gloss Yellow, Bronze and Silver that look like they were applied by slipping the speaker into a paint shop while they were putting the finish coat on an Italian sports car.
iHome iDL100 Clock Radio with Two Lightning Docks & USB
iHome has done it again, hitting the market first (as far as we can tell) with a premier lightning-based docking solution for those looking for the ultimate tabletop alarm clock. We've always admired iHome's alarm clocks for being the best at what they are intended to be—first and foremost, that is. The iHome iDL100 includes two lightning docks as well as a triple 2.1 charging hub for your iDevices. The iDL100's universal USB dock is legacy-compatible, so even if you don't have the latest technology you can still recharge and play audio from legacy devices.
Definitive Technology Sound Cylinder Preview: Give your iPad a Portable Bluetooth Speaker
This year at CES, Definitive Technology showed off a new portable Bluetooth speaker, the Sound Cylinder. As the name implies, it is a cylindrical shape and sports a 43mm woofer on one end for bass, and power/volume controls on the other. On the front of the unit are two 32mm mid/high frequency drivers and on the back is a USB port for charging, adjustable kickstand, and 3.5mm audio input jack. On a full charge the battery can last for up to 10 hours (depending on system volume). We got a private demo and were impressed by the pronounced stereo effects for such a small speaker. Definitive Technology also showed off a new prototype soundbar designed to offer people a lesser expensive alternative to the SoloCinema XTR.
Soul Party in a Box P910 Preview-the $1000 Boom Box
Soul Electronics is a relative newcomer to the world of AV, but they hit the market with plenty of backing. While they started with headphones, Soul is now moving into new territory, starting with the redesign of the boombox. After over a year of R&D the company has determined that a $1000 portable, wireless entertainment system dubbed “Party in a Box P910” is just the ticket for struggling musicians, middle income families, college students and people looking to set up a giant 20" box next to their TVs for better audio. The PIAB P910 jams so many functions into one sleek package (Bluetooth, Aux input, an Apple-compatible dock and HDMI) that we wonder if they are simply charging $75 per feature.
Yamaha TSX-132, TSX-B32, MCR-042, and MCR-B142 Preview
f you are looking for a great looking desktop audio system, Yamaha may have what you need with their new MCR-B142 ($449), MCR-042 ($399), TSX-B232 ($549), and TSX-132 ($449). They can grab music from multiple sources, including an internal CD player, iOS devices or flash drives (via USB), AM/FM radio or from a 3.5mm Aux input. The MCR-B142 and TSX-B232 also feature Bluetooth connectivity for streaming music directly from a portable device. You can also download the Yamaha DTA Controller App for your iOS device and control the alarm settings remotely. The MCR models are styled like a typical shelf stereo system, with a head unit and two separate speakers. The head unit puts out 15Wx2 and the two speakers feature a single 4.5” driver in a bass-reflex enclosure. The TSX systems are all-in-one, like a Bose Wave Radio, and feature dual 3.15” cones. Read on for a full review.
Dok CR34 Multi-Charging Dok Station Review
The problem with most clock radios is that they will charge a device, but typically only an Apple or Android device. One product. One type of dock. Now, in my bedroom, on the nightstand I have three devices: my iPhone, my iPad, and my Kindle Touch. If I had the newer iPhone 5 then I'd have, literally, three different connection types to deal with. No clock radio can handle that... Except this one.
Bowers & Wilkins Z2 iPod/iPhone Dock Preview
The B&W Zeppelin retailed for $600 when it was released. That was a hard pill for people to swallow. But the new Z2 is coming out with a much more affordable $400 price tag. While it certainly isn't an impulse buy, the Z2 is much more in reach for most of us. In the end, we've found that with B&W, you get what you pay for. What you're getting with the Z2 is a top of the line Apple dock and AirPlay streamer with the heritage and know-how of the legendary Bowers & Wilkins behind it. For many, $400 will be a small price to pay for the promise of that sort of sonic performance. We are very keen to see how well this new dock holds up to the flagship Zeppelin.
Geneva Lab Model S Wireless Speaker Preview
The original Geneva Lab Model S was an award winning iPod dock. The new Geneva Lab Model S Wireless gets rid of the dock and adds Bluetooth 2.1 compatibility for use with all smartphones. Sure, you still need to plug it into a wall but it will connect to your device without you having to plug it in. Those without iDevices are sure to be glad to hear that Geneva Lab went with Bluetooth rather than AirPlay. We're interested to see how this new Model S Wireless speaker will sound. With a "we'll believe it when we hear it" specified response down the 75Hz, FM Radio with alarm, and 3.5mm input, there is something for everyone. Everyone looking for a $300 retro-chic clock radio that is.
Zagg Origin 2-in-1 Bluetooth Speaker System Preview
Convenience. The Zagg Origin 2-in-1 Bluetooth speaker system represents it. Honestly, we expected the portable and the desktop speakers to connect wirelessly to share content but having the portable one as the main Bluetooth receiver makes the most sense. We can see a lot of people interested in this product. While $250 isn't cheap, it certainly isn't overly expensive seeing that you are getting two speakers in the deal. If you tend to listen to music in your bedroom or office, but occasionally want to take it with you, the Zagg Origin 2-in-1 Bluetooth speaker system could be perfect for you.
Cambridge Audio Minx M5 Multimedia Speakers Preview
Cambridge Audio introduces their new Minx M5 multimedia speakers. This desktop system connects digitally (USB) to your computer and uses its own DAC rather than connecting to your soundcard like other systems. The Cambridge Audio Minx M5 have 3" cube (2" drivers) satellite speakers paired with an 8" cube (5.25" woofer) sub. An external control unit allows you to control the volume and power of the Minx M5 and has a headphone output and a 3.5mm input for your portable device. All this for $229? Cambridge Audio has seriously thrown down the gauntlet with the Minx M5 multimedia speaker system.
Cambridge Audio Minx M5 Multimedia Speaker System Review
I can take almost nothing away from the Cambridge Audio Minx M5. This multimedia speaker system sounds like it was designed by people that love good sound and really want to bring it to you. Cambridge Audio did a lot with the Minx M5. The higher frequencies and midrange sound fantastic. I mean, REALLY good. Better the harder you listen to them. The bass isn't as deep as you'd like, but what are you going to do with a 5.25" woofer in an 8" cube? The real standout is the control module. Putting volume and power control where you can reach it is one thing. Pairing it with the main USB input, a 3.5mm input, and a headphone output is brilliant. The Cambridge Audio Minx M5 is a speaker system truly deserving of the moniker "Multimedia". This may be the only system you use with more than one device.
Wren V5AP AirPlay Speaker Review
I'm a big fan of Apple products, and so anything that plays nice and plays back my music typically turns my head. That's the Wren V5AP in a nutshell. The AP stands for AirPlay, and the Wren V5 also comes in BT (Bluetooth) and PF (Play-Fi or Android) flavors as well. What’s even more surprising is that Wren will update or change your unit from one technology to the other for just $99 within the warranty period-that’s within the first three years if you register the product within 30 days.
Cambridge Audio Minx Air 200 Wireless Music System Review
The Minx Air200 from Cambridge Audio is a $600 AirPlay and Bluetooth speaker. Yes, we're high rollin' today. At that price I realized that it had better impress me...a lot...or this would be a very tough, very tiring review. Unboxing the speaker I liked the size of the Air200. It's substantial. Sitting at 7.2" high and nearly 18" wide, it's much larger than I had expected and weighs 11 pounds. The Air200 is white with a silver rim and gray speaker grill cloth that spans the entire face of the system. On top are 5 Internet Radio preset buttons and controls for Volume, Power and Source.
BRAVEN 855s Bluetooth Weather-Resistant Speaker Preview
At $300, the BRAVEN 855s Bluetooth speaker is expensive but well equipped. Bluetooth 3.0 enabled, it has a 3.5mm input for a direct connection and the ability to pair with another BRAVEN 855s for a stereo experience. With a built-in mic, you can use it to answer calls without having to disconnect. Heck, with a little creative accounting, you could pass this off as a business expense as a speaker phone. With a water resistant case, you don't have to worry about Dave from accounting getting sloppy at the office party and spilling his beer on it...again. As an added bonus, the BRAVEN 855s can charge your wireless device with a charging-only USB port. While we're not sure how it would fair on an actual adventure, we're pretty sure it can take any abuse you might throw at it around the house or office.
Aperion Audio Allaire ARIS Wireless Speaker System Review
Winner of the 2013 Audioholics Consumer Excellence award, the Aperion Audio Allaire ARIS Wireless Speaker system is impressive. Reproducing crisp audio, paired with a sleek design, the ARIS would enhance most home decors. The ARIS Wireless Speaker System is “future-proof” and the option to future proof a tabletop audio system can be invaluable as the ever-changing world of technology continues to advance with new breakthroughs. Stream in style with the ARIS, your ears will thank you.
kubxlab Earshots Portable Speakers Preview and Sound Test
The kubxlab Earshots are very small (the size of a shot glass), portable, rechargeable speakers for your mobile device or laptop. They are what amounts to a tweeter in a small case. While we like the design, the sound leaves something to be desired. With a 3.5mm connection to your computer or device, they aren't trying to be wireless with all the hassles that often come up with those types of connections. Since they are two different speakers that can be located in different places, they will provide a stereo image - something many portable speakers claim to do but often fail miserably. When all you want is an upgrade to your laptop's speakers so that you can enjoy some music, being small and light is probably enough. Add in that they operate on a Li-Ion battery so you can use them anywhere and it is easy to see why someone would want to spend $50 on the kubxlab Earshots. Until they hear them that is.
Berlin Boombox Preview
I think the regular readers of Audioholics know that I'm mostly pretty fair when I write these preview articles. I try to present the good with the bad in a way that informs rather than incites. But, this time, I can hold my tongue no longer. Sometimes Kickstarter uncovers some truly original products. Products that are too niche to be considered by major producers but cool enough that there are enthusiasts who would gladly put out money for them. This is not one of those times. The Berlin Boombox is a DIY cardboard boombox that connects to your device by 3.5mm. Yes cardboard. Yes, you put it together yourself. And yes, it does cost $80.
Ematic ESB100 Wireless Speaker and Speakerphone Preview
Ematic is looking to exceed your expectations with their ESB100 Bluetooth speaker. When you buy a wireless Bluetooth speaker, you expect to get a wireless Bluetooth speaker. You don't expect it to be a speakerphone that is compatible with Android Voice Commands and Siri. You don't expect it to be able to connect to your system essentially transforming it into a Bluetooth receiver for your home theater. While we're not exactly sure all the specifications of the ESB100, we like what we see so far. With a 35 hour battery, two different grille colors (both included), and a small size (about the size of a softball), the ESB100 looks like a lot of functionality that many people would want.
NanoHiFi PNH-2200 Portable Desktop Audio System Review
It's easy to find a desktop system for your home or office. But it is hard to find one that sounds really great. NanoHiFi has put together a portable desktop audio system that aims to do just that - sound great. Depending on the model you get, you may have access to just FM and USB (as well as external sources) or you can bump up to a CD player or even a CD with a Bluetooth connection. While we had some issues with the NanoHiFi PNH-2200, one thing we didn't have a problem with is the sound. The sound quality is rich, lush, and agnostic of placement. For some, that will more than justify the price. For people that don't want to fiddle with the Bluetooth, read on to find out if the NanoHiFi is for you.
iCreation speeCup Portable Bluetooth Speaker and Dock in a Cup Review
The iCreation speeCup is a speaker in a cup. About the size of a Venti coffee, it connects via Bluetooth to your phone or portable device. The speeCup has an upwards-facing driver that fires into a convex plate for maximum dispersion of sound and sports a bass-reflex design. There is a control ring and a few buttons on the top and you can wave your hand over the top of it for some gesture controls. The kicker is that is has a line-out turning this "speaker into a cup" into a "Bluetooth dock in a cup". Either way - it's in a cup. While I found it to be a Jack of all Trades, Master of None - the Bluetooth was one of the best implementations I've ever experienced. With no line-in as a backup - it better be.
Definitive Technologies Cube Tri-Polar Bluetooth Speaker Preview
The new Def Tech Cube (not to be confused with any of the various SuperCubes) is a portable Bluetooth speaker with a bit of a unique design. Yes, it is in the shape of a cube (almost - it is 7.7″ H x 7.5″ W x 7.5″ D) but it has drivers firing in three directions - hence the "tri-polar" moniker. According to our information, it has five 1.25″ mid/high frequency drivers firing out the sides (under the grilles in the picture) and a 5.25″ woofer firing out the top. While Bluetooth is nice for compatibility with most portable devices (and some computers), it can be problematic to pair. Those phones with NFC (Near Field Communications) can gently bump the Cube to pair their devices. The Cube gets near-CD sound quality from Bluetooth streams by supporting aptX and AAC codecs. A 3.5mm input is available for a direct connection. The Def Tech Cube will retail for $399.
Cambridge Audio Minx Xi Digital Music System Review
The new Minx Xi Digital Music System from Cambridge Audio is a hopped up high-end streaming media player that will let you play just about any music source imaginable. It's built on Cambridge Audio's popular NP30 platform and shares a lot of the same controls and features, but it adds a 40W stereo amplifier to make this a small integrated amplifier on steroids. Integrated amp, network music streaming device...the terminology is tough because it does almost everything.
IK Multimedia iLoud Portable Speaker Preview
Don't let the name fool you, the iLoud is probably one of the coolest portable speakers we've seen in a long time. Billed as a portable speaker with "studio monitor sound", the iLoud isn't your typical portable speaker. Sure, it has Bluetooth and a 3.5mm input, 40 watts of power, and a bass-reflex design but lots of other speakers boast similar specs. What sets the IK Multimedia iLoud head and shoulders above the rest is that you can plug your guitar or mic directly into the iLoud along with your iDevice to not only provide portable amplification for the instrument but audio processing from your iDevice. At $300 a pop, it isn't cheap but point us to one other offering with the same features as the iLoud.
Panasonic SC-NA10 Bluetooth Portable Speaker Preview
Panasonic's $200 SC-NA10 is the first of two portable Bluetooth speakers from the AV giant. The SC-NA10 has two 1.625" drivers and a 3.125" passive radiator. With a mic for answering calls, Bluetooth, NFC (for easy pairing), low-latency apt-X, and Panasonic's own XBS Master DSP for maximizing the sound output and quality, the SC-NA10 is a speaker you won't mind taking with you. The cover doubles as a stand (aped from the iPad covers), it has a 3.5mm input, and it will charge your phone. The real claim to fame of the SC-NA10 is the battery. In long-play mode, it will last up to 20 hours - an industry best.
MartinLogan Crescendo Bluetooth & Airplay Speaker Preview
Making its debut at CES 2014, MartinLogan's latest creation, the Crescendo, is a nod to the times: a compact speaker system with wireless connectivity options including Bluetooth and Apple Airplay (over WiFi). Priced at a nickel under $900 and available in gloss black or a real walnut veneer, MartinLogan claims, unlike so many similar systems, that the Crescendo doesn't sacrifice sound quality in the name of convenience. What tricks does Martin Logan have up their sleeve? Keep reading to find out.
Satechi ST-SX200 AirBass Active Bluetooth Speakers Review
Are you looking for new computer speakers? The Satechi ST-SX200 AirBass Active Bluetooth speakers are a great solution. With a single usable input on the back (either 3.5mm or stereo RCA) and Bluetooth, you can connect your computer and stream from your phone or device. The Satechi ST-SX200 have a USB port for charging, a subwoofer output (a rarity on speakers of this size/price), and a very small form factor. With a few caveats, it is hard to find anything really wrong with the Satechi ST-SX200 speakers. At under $100/pair, they are a great value and we have no problems recommending them.
Aperion Audio Allaire Bluetooth Speaker Review
With the aptX codec, Bluetooth audio is finally capable of CD-quality wireless reproduction. Aperion Audio leverages this new technology, along with analog and digital inputs, to create a pair of affordable, do-it-all speakers for the modern lifestyle. Say hello to the new Allaire Bluetooth Speaker System. Can these mini-monitors compete against traditional speakers and the new field of bluetooth speaker docks? The answers lie within.
Harman Kardon Nova Bluetooth Speakers Video Review
The Harman Kardon Nova Bluetooth Speakers feature fantastic aesthetics, NFC Bluetooth pairing, and a passive radiator for additional bass. They sport a 1.25" tweeter and a 2.5" driver in each speaker rather than the "full range" drivers we sometimes see on this type of speaker. Other than Bluetooth, there is a 3.5mm input as well as an optical input and a 3.5mm headphone output available. Sonically, the Nova speakers sound phenomenal for their size. If you are looking for stylish, good sounding, Bluetooth speakers, and have $300 to burn, these are for you.
Braven 710 Portable Bluetooth Speaker Review
The Braven 710 is a go-anywhere portable Bluetooth speaker slightly smaller than a brick, but just as tough thanks to its aircraft grade aluminum shell. The 710 also boasts IPX5 certification, meaning it's splash/water resistant (though don't expect it to swim if you drop it in a tub of water). What about the sound? Suffice it to say that Braven has at least one neat trick up their sleeve which promises better than average sound quality from the form factor. Curious? Click to keep reading and watch our Youtube video review.
Denon HEOS Wireless Audio System Preview
Denon is throwing it's hat in the wireless speaker ring with their new HEOS Wireless Audio system. Featuring a trio of speakers, with pre-amps and more on the way, this system connects to your phone, wireless network, and the Internet. It can stream content from your mobile devices, NAS drives, cloud services, or local devices via a USB port. While details are still a little thin, we know the prices will range from $300 to $600 each for the speakers.
DD Audio PM151 Powered Speakers and ABC10 Subwoofer Review
The DD Audio PM151 powered monitor and ABC10 subwoofer are well priced and capable of substantial output for near field listening. This home audio offering from a company often associated with car audio is in line with their long history of good sound at a good price. Although not perfect, this full range powered monitor system is a good value and offers some features not typically found in studio monitors. Check out our recently added Youtube Video Review of this system.
Def Tech Embraces DTS Play-Fi With New Wireless Speakers
It seems that all manufacturers are starting to realize they need to catch up with SONOS. Def Tech has settled on the DTS Play-Fi solution. The cool thing about Play-Fi is that you can mix and match Play-Fi devices from any brand and they will work together. Plus, it works with a variety of programs including iTunes. Def Tech introduced two wireless speakers (W7 and W9), a soundbar and sub combo (W Studio), a streaming box (W Adapt), and a combo streaming box and amp (W Amp).
Polk Audio Omni DTS Play-Fi Wireless Speakers and Devices
Polk Audio at CEDIA 2014 introduced its Omni Wireless Music System—designed to stream wirelessly via DTS' Play-Fi solution. Much like the Definitive Technology announcement at the same CEDIA, the Polk offerings take the forms of a couple of smaller speakers, a soundbar and sub combo, and a streaming box with the option of including amps. The advantage of the Polk offerings is that they are less expensive than the Def Tech ones. The downside is that they don't have nearly the style and, in some cases, the power of the Definitive products.
McIntosh MXA70 Desktop Integrated Audio System Preview
At CEDIA 2014, we caught a glimpse of the McIntosh MXA70 Integrated Audio System. This desktop solution isn't just a bare-bones receiver with a couple of knockoff speakers. The MXA70 includes a high-quality headphone amp, three digital inputs capable of accepting up to 24-bit/192Hz (a fourth can accept 32-bit/192Hz), and speakers rated down to 60Hz. With cast aluminum enclosures for the speakers and the traditional McIntosh stylings (like the Output Meters), it should come as no surprise that the MXA70 commands a $6000 price tag.
Crazybaby Mars Portable Flying Bluetooth Speaker Preview
Are you ready for a close encounter of the third kind? The Crazybaby Mars is a portable speaker inspired by alien technology with an aluminum saucer that, literally, floats above it's base station while providing aptX Bluetooth for CD-quality sound, a built-in microphone, wireless linking of multiple units, and auto-volume feature that increase volume when you move away from the unit. This portable speaker can also recharge your devices from it's portable battery.
BenQ treVolo Electrostatic Bluetooth Speaker Preview
BenQ has long been known as a quality brand when it comes to projectors. Imagine our surprise when their new product for CES 2015 turned out to be a Bluetooth speaker - an electrostatic one at that. We imagine this might be one of the best sounding portable speakers ever to hit the market. The only problems we anticipate are the fragility of the electrostatic wings and off-axis response. We are anxious to get a hold of a review sample to give you a full report. At $299, the treVolo looks like a very interesting product for BenQ.
Ruark Audio MR1 Bluetooth Speakers Review
It's been almost two years since this company introduced their famous MR1 Bluetooth Speakers and they are still receiving good feedback from customers all over the globe. With an optional battery pack, remote control, and of course Bluetooth streaming with aptX technology for CD quality streaming; this little set of speakers deserves a look. Our recently added youTube video review gives you a full report on our audio experience with these little gems. The only question remains is what will you use them for? Desktop audio for your PC, gaming, portable audio for beach and picnic functions, or ALL of the above?
Fluance Fi50 Two-Way Hi-Fi Wireless Speaker System Review
The Fluance Fi50 Bluetooth wireless speaker system sporting dual 5" concentric drivers with silk dome tweeters, and 40 watts of amplifier power (continuous rating) promises high fidelity audio with the convenience of a compact form factor. Armed with 2.1 + EDR, aptX codec for uncompromised streaming capabilities, 2.1A USB charging input, and a sleek design make this a potentially awesome solution that belies its asking price. How can they pack this much tech into an attractive package (with MDF finish options) for under $200? Read on and check out our recently added YouTube Video review to find out how we liked it.
KEF MUO Portable Speaker Preview
The MUO is an ingenuous portable speaker system from KEF that utilizes Bluetooth, Lithium ion batteries, and 2 x 50mm full range Uni-Q drivers and 1 Auxiliary Bass Radiator to give good sound out a small portable unit. It packs quite a punch that Ronda Rousey better take care to notice. A formal review is in the works but for now check out some of the details in this product preview.
Paradigm Premium Wireless Play-Fi Series Speakers/Amp Preview
At CEDIA 2014, Paradigm and MartinLogan announced that they were going to develop DTS Play-Fi enabled wireless products. At CEDIA 2015, they delivered. Paradigm was showcasing three Play-Fi products, the PW 800 speaker, PW 600 speaker, PW Link pre-amplifier, and the PW AMP amplifier. Paradigm’s Play-Fi offerings are unique from anything else on the market because they all use Anthem Room Correction (ARC). Unlike similar room correction offerings that use the mic built into your phone, ARC uses an actual separate calibration microphone. Read on for pictures, pricing, and details.
MartinLogan Play-Fi Wireless Speaker Lineup Preview
MartinLogan, much like sister company Paradigm, has gone all in with DTS Play-Fi products. At CEDIA 2014 both companies announced that they were going to release Play-Fi speakers, and at CEDIA 2015 they were on display. MartinLogan now has four Play-Fi products, the Crescendo tabletop speaker, Bravado bookshelf speaker, Motion Vision X soundbar, and Forte wireless amplifier. While these products very closely mimic what Paradigm offers, MartinLogan chose to create products with just a bit more attention to modern style and performance. Check out our recently added YouTube video overview @ CES 2016 discussing how ARC can be used for any subwoofer.
Emotiva Airmotiv 3b Bluetooth Speaker Review
Desktop audio is generally a letdown. But leave it to Emotiva to come up with a desktop speaker that defies conventional wisdom. Emotiva's Airmotiv 3b is two way, front-ported speaker that is great-souding, chest-thumping, and takes up minimal real-estate while also being kind on your wallet. What more could you ask for? How about both wired and Bluetooth wireless connectivity, a 60 watt stereo amplifier, aptX codec support, and 32-bit DSP. Read on to see why this small-sized wireless powerhouse left us impressed.

Portable, functional, great aesthetics and a name like KEF to back it up are all great selling points for this not so inexpensive but potent little wireless speaker system. Read our review and be sure to check out our YouTube video overview for further insights.
Bowers and Wilkins Zeppelin Wireless Speaker Review
The B&W Zeppelin Wireless line has evolved, losing the iPod dock in favor of a mostly all-wireless design. Although the form factor has remained largely unchanged, this football-shaped amplified speaker packs huge sound in a relatively small package. The Zeppelin Wireless’s flexible setup with both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity makes this forward-looking speaker a delight even with its hefty price tag.
Oppo Sonica WiFi Speaker System Preview
You know that Oppo makes great headphones, and their Blu-ray players are so good that most of our reviewers use them in their reference systems. Oppo obviously isn't resting on their laurels as evident that they partnered up with Dirac, a leading Room Correction company, to announce their new Sonica Wi-Fi Speakers with Dirac room correction. Two great companies collectively working on a product should mean a great Wi-Fi speaker. read on to find out.
Oppo Sonica Wi-Fi Speaker Review
Audioholics reviewed the new Oppo Sonica Wi-Fi speaker this week and the old adage “Good things come in small packages” couldn’t be truer here. This $300 Hi-Fi wireless speaker has elegant styling and great sound and is easy to set up and use. But, can it compete in a crowded market of name brand companies like Sony and Bose? Read on to find out and be sure to watch our YouTube video review.

Klipsch iGroove HG Speaker System Review
I first saw the Klipsch iGroove HG at an Apple Store a few months ago. From across the store, in a sea of iPod speaker systems there was this curvy black beauty standing out like a diamond in the rough. Before I even heard it, I wanted one. But how would it sound?
Audioengine A5 Powered Speaker System Review
As a reviewer, one gets a chance to see, hear and play with a variety of equipment - some good and some not so good. Every now and then a product comes into your hands that takes you by surprise. The Audioengine 5 is one of those. Let’s face the facts; in the world of MP3 players and portable music systems, most of them leave a lot to be desired. This is not true of the Audioengine A5.
Monitor Audio i-deck Review
Consumer gadgets come and go but few have much of a lasting impression. Then there are those few that do. Like the Sony Walkman before it, the Apple iPod has achieved iconic status in our pop culture. Every student both young and old wants an iPod. Both of my children and my wife have one along with myself. We are a 4-iPod family. Forget just any MP3 player, they are a distant second and likely to remain there for some time. When something achieves the status level of the iPod, it creates a ripple effect in the aftermarket accessory marketplace. From FM transmitters to arm bands there is a plethora of merchandise one can go broke on after you have purchased your iPod. One such category is that of amplified speakers and docking stations. There are many to choose from, and like anything else, there are good ones and then there is junk. One of these that fall into the “good ones” category is the i-deck from Monitor Audio. Read on to get the details.
GINI iTube & iConec iPod Tube Speaker System
When Audioholics called me a few months ago and asked if I would be interested in reviewing a tube based desktop speaker system, I immediately said yes. Who wouldn't be intrigued by such an idea? A digital iPod combined with an old-school vacuum tube based audio system. This could be great or it could be a joke, but it sounded like fun either way.
EGO Waterproof Sound Case for iPods
I first encountered the EGO Waterproof Sound Case at CES in Las Vegas. I was actually trying to figure out where I was in the massive convention center when Ron Lien, the marketing manager of Atlantic asked if I would like to see their new products. The display that really caught my eye was an iPod speaker soundcase in a sealed bowl with water spraying over it.
PlanterSpeakers Terra Cotta 8.20 by Madison Feilding Inc.
Outdoor speakers usually take the shape of rocks… and often sound about as good. Well, not all of us HAVE a lot of rocks in their backyards, so sticking a rock-shaped speaker out there would be as bad as installing an all-weather speaker. The PlanterSpeakers Terra Cotta 8.20 by Madison Fielding looks like a large planter (because it is). Your wife can stick a plant in it, water that plant, and you never have to worry about your speaker. It can rain, snow, salty waves can spritz it… still, no worries. All weather? You bet. Multipurpose? Absolutely. Inexpensive? Well…
Mondo Mint Music System Review
The Mondo Mint system is both a lifestyle music product, USB audio device AND a wireless iPod system. Now, it's not every system that allows you to drop your iPod into a local OR remote charging station and have either location play it through the same set of speakers. And just TRY to find something that can play audio via USB from your PC as well... The Mondo closely resembles a double-wide Apple Mini, with the same color motif and rounded corners. It's a nice look and the machine will fit in well with an AppleTV should you decide to go that route.
Soundolier duo Wireless Speaker Lamp Review
In our experience, wireless hasn't been done right yet and we were hoping that Soundolier would be the first. Soundolier has obviously worked very hard to ensure a stable and strong wireless connection. I would have no problem recommending these speakers to anyone that has décor issues (as long as you don't turn them up too loud) or is just looking for a nondescript way to get background music into a room without the hassles of wires. They are an expensive solution for sure but the ease of setup and the rock solid wireless connection may make that extra money seem well spent.
Boston Acoustics Voyager RK6T2 Review
Getting great sound outdoors without being obtrusive is not always an easy task. When Boston Acoustics announced their new line of Voyager Rock speakers, it piqued my interest. Reviewing the Boston Acoustics RK6T2 rock speakers was a refreshing experience. These speakers rocked both figuratively and literally in every conceivable way an end user would expect them to. Not only did they exceed my expectations from an aesthetic standpoint, but their fidelity and linearity simply blew me away. The RK6T2’s are a versatile, high value product that will dress up your patio, porch or other outdoor function area with unprecedented sound quality that will be a hit at your gatherings and the envy of your neighbors. Boston Acoustics truly sets the benchmark for others to follow in this speaker genre.
Yamaha NX-U10 USB Powered Stereo Speaker
When I first spied the NX-U10 USB powered speaker system at CES, I was pretty impressed. A portable speaker system that can be powered by the wall, batteries, OR USB? That's a pretty nifty idea. The NX-U10 may not be the ultimate in high fidelity playback but it has a lot going for it - the portability is outstanding, the aesthetics are fantastic, and the performance is above my expectations. For the person on the go that wants a break from headphones or just wants to share their music with someone else, the NX-U10 fits the bill nicely.
Griffin Amplifi 2.1 Speaker System Review
For the last twenty years, I have been a career musician. It hasn't always been pretty, but it has been pretty fun. Part of my job is to acquire and figure out a lot of different types of musical gear. I've read my share of manuals, mastered many a menu, and wrestled with the buttons, switches and inputs on everything from high-end recording gear to stomp box guitar pedals. So when I was given the opportunity to check out Griffin's "one-knobbed wonder," the Amplifi, I was stoked. Just one knob? Sounds like a bit of heaven! Griffin continues to put easy to use, value-priced gear into the marketplace and this piece is no exception as it goes up against competition like the Bose SoundDock and the Altec Lansing IM7. Lets see how it does.
Rocketfish Wireless Rear Speaker Kit Review
Wireless speakers are the prize – the nirvana of a futuristic home theater system. Rocketfish isn't the first on the market with a product that promises to do away with the hassle of having it run wires from the front of the room to the back, but with a price point under $100 and a presence in big box stores like Best Buy it has the face-time to make some people really take a chance and use this method for finally achieving surround sound.
Yamaha NX-U10 USB Speaker Video
The Yamaha NX-U10 USB speaker is a multi-faced speaker that can be powered in almost any way imaginable... except for fuel cell or solar. OK, so it takes USB power, batteries and even AC - but it's still a cool option for getting sound that bests the often underwhelming sound quality of most laptops. With its lightweight styling and surprisingly loud output levels, the NX-U10 will make for a portable speaker solution that won't take up much room and fits nicely into your laptop case.
B&W Zeppelin Speaker System for iPod Review
B&W's Zeppelin speaker system for iPod looks more like a piece of modern art than a set of speakers. Then again, it looks more like a black and chrome version of the Hindenburg than modern art. So aside from being aptly named, how does it sound? Priced at $599, B&W calls it "audiophile grade" and "stunning." I for one was ready for this thing to land at my house so I could find out for myself.
mStation 2.1 Stereo Tower Review
It's hard to feel luke-warm about the iPod. You either hate it or love it. The hundreds of iPod-centric devices and gadgets which have hit the market in the past several years since the debut of the device has seen to that. I've seen many iPod speaker systems in my time, but none have had the sheer presence of the mStation. Far from catering to the unimposing and diminished size of the iPod, the 2.1 Stereo Tower presents itself as a domineering system that can still manage to hide itself away in a corner or against a wall without taking up too much space.
Vestalife Ladybug iPod System
Sometimes you just cover a product because it looks cool. iPod speakers and docking systems are a dime a dozen these days, but that only seems to drive manufacturers to come out with more and more outrageous and creative designs. Vestalife debuted a new Ladybug-inspired iPod speaker and docking system that shares the same name. The Ladybug has speakers which fold out in an arc - just like the wings of a ladybug (at least how I think they do). The system includes a universal iPod dock that even supports the iPhone and iTouch. When connected to AC, the system will also charge the docked iPod.
MelodyWing Wireless Speaker Technology
This is one of our few "technology" reviews that we get to do from time to time. We love it since it nets us a sneak peek at upcoming technologies even before they are polished and placed within a manufacturer's final packaging. The MelodyWing wireless speaker system from SST (Silicon Storage Technology, Inc.) being reviewed here is a dual-band system that can be utilized for driving surround speakers or even a second audio zone without the need for running wires. All that is required is power - and that is a lot easier to locate than running cables. The MelodyWing is a different product that is built with a touch more robustness and which also came with two receivers so each could be discretely paired with its own loudspeaker.
Polk Audio SurroundBar360 DVD Theater
Polk Audio showed off the $1,199.95 SurroundBar360 DVD Theater: a two-piece surround sound system that includes a single SurroundBar 360 multichannel loudspeaker (44½" W x 4 7/8" D x 4 1/8" H) and a separate, compact electronics console (16½" W x 11½" D x 3 3/16" H) that contains an integrated DVD/CD player, SDA signal-processing amplifier, AM/FM radio, and a host of digital, analog, USB, and video inputs.
Creative GigaWorks T40 Speaker System Review
The Creative GigaWorks T40 speaker system is a great solution for people looking for an upgrade to the lousy stock speakers that came with their PC. With a street price of around $125 in many places, the GigaWorks T40 speakers deliver great sound without taking up too much space on your desktop.
Sierra Sound iN Studio 5.0 Smart Speakers Review
To call the Sierra Sound iN Studio 5.0 speaker system an iPod speaker system would be to miss the point entirely. This is a very well-built, great looking pair of bookshelf speakers that happen to be powered, and also have a built-in iPod dock on top. After living with these speakers in variety of locations around my home and office for several weeks, I found plenty to write about.
Edifier E3350 2.1 Desktop Speakers
The impossible; that's what motivates me. In fact, isn't that what motivates all of humanity? The first astronaut in space, an electric powered car, the telephone, the atomic bomb. There are so many examples of people achieving what was once thought the impossible. Our personal impossible achievements may not be on the same level as the printing press, but still the impossible is what drives us. When reviewing the E3350 system by Edifier, I wondered if they set out to achieve the impossible. Did they ask themselves, "Can we make a sound system that is both an audio and visual piece of entertainment? Can our sound system also be its own art collection?" I believe that these questions drove the design of the E3350.
Eos Wireless Multi-Room Speakers Review
The Eos Digital Wireless Multi-Room Audio System stands for simplicity and reliability at a cheaper cost. IntelliTouch wants to offer consumers a product that is easy on the wallet and easy to set up. The Eos Wireless System is the product they believe will fulfill all of those goals. Of course you can find a bigger, better, more expensive hamburger and of course there may be bigger, fancier sound systems out there, but for the cost and consistency, IntelliTouch does not want to be beat.
CEDIA Lifestyle Choices
Lifestyle products are always one of my favorite categories at CEDIA each year. Here you will find everything from the ridiculous to the genius. The 2008 Expo proved this to be true with an array of interesting products on the show floor. Need a tube amp docking station for your iPod? You have more than one choice. How about a flat panel display with a built-in iPod dock? Saw that too. What about a combo charger/speakers/dock for your nifty new iPhone? Oh yeah, it's out there. Keep reading for a few more things I found during my first two days at the 2008 CEDIA Expo.
iPod Portable Docking Speaker Systems Roundup
I constantly have people asking me about speakers for their iPods. It seems everyone has an iPod these days, even those of us who prefer to listen to full-fidelity music on our big systems. And the reality is, more often than not we are in the kitchen, at the office, or traveling - which means we need a more portable audio solution. Is it any wonder the iPod is such a success? I decided to do a roundup of portable docking speaker systems for the iPod, to get a better idea of what the latest offerings are from several manufacturers.
ZVOX Z-Base 550 Surround Speaker System
In this digital age we live in, sometimes we get locked into the "more-is-better" mode. How many formats can it decode, how many different inputs/outputs does it have, exactly how big is the birds nest of cables coming out of the back of the unit? Actually - that mode works most of the time, but thing is, sometimes you just need to shut up and listen before you pass judgment on it. If you are an old school guy (read - your VCR was always blinking 12:00) the Z-Base 550 does a decent job of creating surround effects by ignoring all the digital data available on a disk and manipulating the analog signal to reproduce what the digital signal contains.
Yamaha MCR-730 and MCR-230 First Look
Yamaha introduced two new micro component systems that focus on new technologies and lifestyle design elements. The new MCR-730 ($499.95 MSRP) includes an integrated DVD player and full HD 1080p support for a complete audio/video solution, while the MCR-230 ($349.95 MSRP) is a sophisticated audio system complete with a built-in iPod dock, USB input, and a high-quality CD player. Each system includes a pair of high-quality two-way speakers that provide excellent bass through a low-height, large depth cabinet design.
Samsung HT-BD8200 Sound Bar with Blu-ray & Netflix
The Samsung HT-BD8200 is a home theater sound bar equipped with a Blu-ray player and wireless subwoofer. This might be the best match I've seen for flat panel TVs in a long time. It's impressive since it features a fully integrated Blu-ray player with Full HD 1080p playback and a virtual 5.1-channel surround sound for a lifelike audio presence. And a wireless subwoofer! It is only 2.6 inches deep and accented with Samsung's Touch of Color design, for a classy, yet cutting-edge look. The included wireless subwoofer means that you can get fuller bass without having to worry about running cables from the sound bar to a corner of the room. It lets you maintain a clean and contemporary look.
Altec Lansing Expressionist PLUS Desktop Speaker System
Marketing drivel aside, the Expressionist PLUS system looks to be a very interesting "add on" speaker system for your next desktop purchase. At only $99, no one is expecting the moon here. The looks alone will sell a lot of systems. Altec Lansing historically has made very decent speaker systems. TheExpressionist PLUS should prove to be no different.
KRK Rokit Powered 6/10s Speaker System Review
While KRK may not be a well known name in the world of home theater, they do have a reputation in the studio market. One of the dangers of getting involved in home theater and high fidelity is that you become incapable (or at least unwilling) to tolerate poor sound - even in your office. I was extremely impressed with the overall performance of the KRK Systems Rokit 6's. Unfortunately, I wasn't as impressed with the system as a whole.
Logitech 360 Degree Speaker Systems
Logitech may just be one of the first speakers many people buy. Why? Because they are attached to their computer. The name is practically synonymous with computer peripherals and control devices. The three new speaker system offerings are the Z320, Z523, and the Z520. The claim to fame with these new speakers is an open back design which is supposed to provide a 360 degree sound experience.
Altec Lansing expressionist PLUS Multimedia Speakers Review
The Altec Lansing expressionist PLUS speakers are beautiful to look at. When it comes to desktop multimedia speakers I have to admit that I'm a sucker for good looks and put that as a high priority when selecting a pair of speakers. This 2.1 systems comes with a 5.25" subwoofer, whose diminutive size still allowed it to push quite a bit of audio and create a well-rounded sound that was, overall, very pleasing to both the eyes and ears.
NAD VISO 1 Wireless Digital Music System Preview
The NAD VISO 1 has a lot of technology that lovers of NAD will absolutely care about. The high end DACs and proprietary amplifiers are sure to impress even neophytes. But where the VISO 1 falls flat is in overall connectivity and functionality. Sure, top-of-line Bluetooth and a direct digital connection to your iDevice is impressive, as is a component video output, but, with only a single additional connection, we're left wanting. For the $700 price tag, we would like to see, at the very least, some sort of wireless connectivity to the Internet for streaming content from connected computers or online services. We're hoping that the other entries into the VISO line from NAD feature a few more...well...features.
Paradigm Millenia CT 2 Speaker System Preview
The new Paradigm Millenia CT 2 system takes just about all the performance of the MilleniaOne CT system and shaves $300 off the price, albeit cutting a few corners. What sort of corners? The CT 2 no longer has aluminum enclosures, the satellite speakers are no longer ported meaning less bass, and the subwoofer is a less potent model. The amplifier power has been slightly reduced as well. Will you miss those corners? With the MilleniaOne CT system costing $1200 and the CT 2 costing $900, perhaps not.
Fluance Ai40 Bluetooth Speaker Review
We had the opportunity to review the Ai40 from Canadian audio manufacturer Fluance. This Bluetooth speaker pair comes with a 5 inch woofer and 1 inch ferrofluid cooled tweeter and 35 watts x2 built in amplification. At $199/pair they’re in the sweet spot for affordability vs. performance, but are they worth it? Read our detailed review and check out our YouTube video to find out.
Qualcomm Commits to Sound Quality in Next-Gen Audio Gadgets
Chip-supplier, Qualcomm says its new QCS400 line of processors will not only make new devices run better with new and interesting features, but will introduce the best sound quality yet in the next-generation of wireless & smart speakers, soundbars and A/V receivers designed by many of your favorite brands. See what may be coming to these products.
SVS Prime Wireless 2.1 Speaker System Review
For $1,100 the SVS Prime Wireless 2.1 Speaker System is a high-quality active speaker system with an awesome subwoofer that can support a multitude of input options including lossless audio streaming for the ultimate fidelity. We always have high expectations from a company like SVS, but do they deliver the goods for the money? Read on to find out in our comprehensive review.
Rocksteady Stadium Wireless Speaker Review
The new Rocksteady Stadium is an affordable Bluetooth 5.0 speaker system with an interesting hook. The idea at the heart of this system is deceptively simple, one speaker all by itself creates a solid rendition of what you'd expect from a small portable Bluetooth speaker. But when you wirelessly connect two or more in a custom wireless sound network and the design really shines as it brings a stereophonic soundstage that exceeds the speaker's diminutive stature. You’ll wonder why all Bluetooth speakers aren’t designed this way! Stereo imaging from compact speakers that you can place almost anywhere is a hook you won't soon get out of your head.
Fluance Ai41 Powered Bookshelf Bluetooth Speakers Review
The new Fluance Ai41 powered bluetooth bookshelf speakers offer performance and features not common in the $250/pair asking price. Having a sub out to extend bass and toslink input makes them a soundbar alternative for music centric listeners that also watch TV. How do they sound? Read our review to find out.
Amazon Echo Studio Review: 3D High-Quality Sound with Smart Home Technology
The Amazon Echo Studio is the first smart speaker that combines voice-activation technology with 3D audio. With other smart speakers, extra features often come at the cost of not being able to provide the kind of immersive, rich, and focused audio that quality speakers provide. Did Amazon produce speakers that combine smart home automation with audiophile speakers? Read on to find out.
Google Nest Audio Smart Speaker Review
Looking to setup a new smart speaker in 2022? Apple has the Homepod mini, Amazon has the Echo, but today we'll be reviewing the Google Nest Audio. Google smart devices are known for their excellent user interpretation of information, but can they translate these in audiophile sound? Read on to find out.
SOUNDBOKS Go: Loudest Bluetooth Party in a Box Speaker Ever?
Soundboks, maker of possibly the biggest and loudest ever (121 dB!) Bluetooth speaker, just released a new "portable" version the speaker the company is named for. Soundboks Go is the smaller, lighter version of its titular Bluetooth speaker. While light on extras, it's incredibly durable and purpose-built for on-the-go concert sound. With a tough build, IP65-rating, 40-hour removable battery and volume knob that goes all the way up to 11, it may be the last speaker you'll ever need for outdoor parties, job sites or anywhere you need to - MAKE SOME NOISE!
Monoprice SoundStage 3 Portable Review: The Bluetooth Swiss Army Knife Boombox!
SoundStage 3 Portable is Monoprice’s new Bluetooth speaker that packs a bevy of input options and even has a sub out. But best of all, it packs an even bigger wallop than its hefty 10.8-lbs would suggest. It brings too much BOOM to be your father’s portable Bluetooth speaker, but old pops will approve of its multi-purpose utility.
Rocksteady Stadium Sub Review: Bluetooth Micro-Sub Excellence!
Two years after reviewing the Rocksteady Stadium speaker system, manufacturer Killer Concepts has finally released a subwoofer for the system. Matched to provide low-end for its bookshelf speakers, the system promises real 2.1 sound in a system that's as portable as it is affordable, and flexible enough to setup anywhere.

Monoprice Monolith MTM-100 Powered Desktop Speaker Review
The Monolith MTM-100 is a $500 high-powered desktop speaker that features 100-watts of amplification, a 1.25” tweeter, two 4” midranges woofers, and two 5.25” passive radiators. That kind of firepower will surely get loud enough for desktop listening, but how good is it aside from just getting loud? Read our full review to find out!
