Angel City Audio at the 2012 Audioholics Get Together Event
Angel City Audio showed off their new Trinity LR speakers at the 2012 Audioholics Get Together event. This is a left/right bookshelf model which has a frequency response of 30Hz - 35kHz and a sensitivity of 90dB @ 1w/m. They are about 16" deep but there is also a Trinity Center model that has a slightly reduced frequency response. It plays down to around 55Hz, but it's also reduced in depth (to just 12") so you can better place it on its side as a center channel.
Now the great thing about these speakers is that you can combine them in a 2-channel, 3-point, 5-point or whatever type of system you want. The LR can disperse evenly enough to be used as a center, or you can grab the Center model for that. Or you could use a whole system of the Center model if you want something a bit smaller in depth all-around and you plan to use a subwoofer to fill in the missing low end.
We got to hear a lot of music, including instrumental, folk and more. When listening to some Dire Straits, it was apparent that the Vifa tweeters had a very high resolution with incredible fidelity. The sound was sort of like a club sound, with a very live feeling that was extremely enjoyable.
The speakers, as we alluded to earlier, are an offset MTM design that allows them to be placed both horizontally and vertically. You can really combine them around the room in any arrangement or configuration you want.
The demo room used a Melody 300b Class-A 22W tube amp and the fact that this thing drive the speakers so well and with such beautiful dynamics really illustrated both the efficiency of these speakers as well as what they are capable of putting out with quality components. The cables were MG Audio Design and the source was from a high resolution Oppo BDP-95 Blu-ray player which, as regular readers will know, includes upgraded audio circuitry to their BDP-93 player.
Overall it was a very flexible, dynamic system. The Trinity LR speakers retail for $2699/pair and we expect a lot more to surface from Angel City Audio as they expand their line-up in the near future.
