JVC may not exactly be a leader in TVs anymore, but they are a big name in home theater projectors. Their products tend to fill a nice sweet spot between entry level projectors and ultra high-end solutions. At CEDIA 2012 they unveiled their new projector lineup which ranges in price from $3,499 to $11,999 and is set to start shipping this November. They essentially make two version of each projector. The DLA-X models are their consumer line, while the DLA-RS models are their professional line.
They are touting quite a few updates to this year’s line. One of the features they are most proud of is e-Shift2, an updated version of their 4K upscaling system, e-Shift. E-Shift2 uses a new polarizing wire grid for higher native contrast and new algorithms and an eight-band filter to apply more correction to the image. It's important to note that these projectors cannot accept a 4K signal. Rather, they use e-Shift2 to process the incoming HD signal into a simulated 4K image.
A new optical engine and circuitry provides reduced crosstalk during 3D viewing. The image is also supposed to be brighter and more natural. And, like many of the newer projectors we saw at CEDIA this year, the active shutter 3D glasses are now RF instead of IR. However, only the top of the line DLX-X95R and DLZ-RS66 include a PK-EM2 3D signal emitter and 2 sets of 3D glasses. The PK-EM2 3D signal emitter can be purchased separately for $99 and glasses can be purchased for $179. If you already own a 3D JVC projector and aren’t happy with your IR glasses, the new glasses and 3D kit are compatible with all JVC 3D projectors.
JVC is also incorporating a new illumination system with improved lamp life and brightness. Additionally, the warranty has been extended to one year/1,000 hours. The DLA-X95R and DLZ-RS66 both have a longer three-year warranty. If you are stuck buying a new lamp, and at some point we are sure you will have to, they retail for $399.
Finally, the DLA-X95R, DLA-X75R, DLA-RS66 and DLA-RS56 are ISF certified, which is something that is sure to appeal to custom installers. JVC also designed them to pass THX 3D certification, which is still pending. If you don't want to spend the money to calibrate your projector, there is a built in THX 2D and 3D Cinema viewing mode. Seriously though, if you are spending $7,999 or more for a projector you should be able to afford to pay for a technician to calibrate your projector in your home. Making adjustments on the fly is also easy thanks to a new mobile app that allows remote control of the projectors from a smartphone or tablet.
