WiGig Wireless to Crowd Out WiDi & HDMI?
I know, I know... that's a lot of Wi-letters. Suffice it to say that the real news here is that WiDi, or a particular flavor of Wireless HD in the 60Hz band hasn't exactly taken off in spades even though WiDi 2.0 is present in all Intel Sandy-bridge laptops with support for 1080p video playback. But word on the street is that Intel, not content with the limitations of WiDi, could well be looking at replacing it with WiGig. In particular, WiDi is more or less designed simply to transmit HDMI. And, as we've seen before, the idea is content, not the proprietary, troublesome connector it's replacing. With truly advanced wireless networking technology as the redefined, or at least self-defined, goal, WiGig seems to be the way to go. WiGig is an organization promoting the adoption of multi-gigabit speed wireless communications technology operating over the as-of-now unlicensed 60 GHz band.
So what do we do with WiGig? Imagine, if you wil a laptop or ultrabook... and now imagine that device wirelessly docking to a display with a full array of USB, FireWire and Ethernet ports. W're talking about using WiGig technology across the board to power video, connectivity and audio. So if all goes well, WiGig will be expanded and supported in much the same way as PCI and USB were and have been. If the new ultrabooks take off as we think they will, the need for this level of docking will increase dramatically and inject some much-needed consumer demand into the marketplace.
