No Blu-ray for Xbox 360. Seriously. Go Home.
Despite what you may have heard in the rumor mills... "Xbox 360 is not currently in talks with Sony or the Blu-ray association to integrate Blu-ray into the Xbox experience." This according to Mr. Greenberg, Microsoft will be concentrating exclusively on digital downloads for content distribution.
Until recently, Microsoft had been supplying HD DVD add-ons for the Xbox 360, after Toshiba declared defeat, industry hawks and analysts thought it would be logical for Microsoft to move in Blu-ray's direction.
In an interview with Reuters news service, Mr. Greenberg, who happens to be group manager for Xbox 360, denied any future plans between the gaming platform and it's (sort of) once-rival Blu-ray, citing downloads as the only path for Microsoft.
"We're the only console offering digital distribution of entertainment content," Mr. Greenberg said in his interview, adding that this will be the sole model Microsoft will adhere to, even for high-definition content distribution. So far, Xbox has one of the more compelling offerings in terms of HD movies and television, though they aren't the only game in town.
Interestingly Microsoft is expecting lower sales number in February due to lack of inventory and financial adjustments, but production has been ramped up, negating any kinks in the retail supply line. He expects April to be the month where Xbox 360 gets back into the groove - coinciding with the much anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto 4. Though available to the competition (PS3), Microsoft's version will have exclusive content not found elsewhere.
