Verbatim DigitalMovie Reel DVD-Rs Full Review
Form and Function
I received some samples of Verbatim's relatively new "DigitalMovie' DVD-Rs and got to take a close look at them. I was surprised to find that great care was taken in the silk-screening of the labels to make them truly look like miniature canisters of film. Look at one up close and you will even see sprocket holes that reveal a hint of textured film behind them. You'll also see ribbed edges that depict film within the "reel". Verbatim really went for a neat look and pulled it off with these discs.
Each disc has two white areas that can be written on to label the disc. Even these areas are mocked up to look like white label tape, with the left side bearing "Title" at the top left. The jewel-style cases are full size and completely transparent (the real transparent cases, not the semi-opaque ones that often come with individually wrapped DVD-Rs.) The center release for each DVD-R is a "center-push" style that appears to be rugged and long-lasting (those of you with broken CD or DVD hubs know why this is significant in any jewel case.) Each case supports a front insert card as well as a full tray card. It may take some fancy cutting to get a spine label in there, however, due to the shape of the hinge.
I burned several DVD movies (of my own creation) using DVD-lab by Mediachance (probably one of the best affordable consumer DVD authoring programs for the PC.) All of the discs worked flawlessly and burned at the advertised 4x rate without any hitches, glitches, or hiccups.
Conclusion
Verbatim has made a great looking and well-performing product 舑 one that is 舠 retro cool 舡 while performing as well as any other DVD-R on the market. If you want more than just a plain DVD to give away or archive your family movies 舑 this is probably the nicest product you'll find. I plan on getting some to record home movies on for use as stocking stuffers at Christmas.
